I attempted to use the bamboo strips to explore the structure of the centre spiral and observe the effect.
Step 1 Because the bamboo strips I purchased were wide, I needed to first cut them into thin strips.Then came the first five bamboo strips held together with wire. At first I wanted to weave these five bamboo strips directly across each other, but realised that this would result in the warp and weft directions being wrong. After careful consideration of the bamboo weaving process, I adjusted to use another five bamboo strips inserted horizontally into the previous five. The five vertical bamboo strips are used as the centre of the structure, and the five horizontal bamboo strips are interspersed and woven on top of them.
When you start weaving, probably because of the dry weather and other reasons, the bamboo strips become very dry and brittle, so they can break if you are not careful. So I soaked and rinsed them again with hot water with the intention of making them softer and more resilient. The experiment proved that this method works.
The first half of the weaving process is relatively smooth, while the second half is more difficult and requires more patience and multiple attempts as the remaining length of the bamboo strips becomes less and you need to keep pressure on the parts that have already been weaved at all times.
However, it was successfully completed, with the centre bamboo strip spiralling as expected, and the next step was to consider whether lighting and dynamics could be added to make it more interesting.
