32 An attempt of the combination of ceramic and crochet

12–10–2023
While at tutorrial, Oscar showed me a ceramic piece by an artist who was pouring mud into a container that she had sewn together with textiles and using this as a mould for the mud to take shape. It was then fired, this is where the textile was burnt away due to the heat, leaving only the already moulded mud. The texture of the textile is also left on the ceramic, which gives the final fired ceramic container a very realistic texture.I thought it was an interesting way to make them, so I wanted to experiment a bit.

So I spent the evening learning to needle crochet and then crocheted a rose and a square container full of horizontal and vertical cross textures. The next day I soaked them in mud several times to get the cotton threads to catch all the mud. Then I found a support surface and set them on a board to dry, and mud-coated the areas that hadn't caught the mud, and then waited for them to dry.

These steps were more difficult than I thought they would be, because I didn't know how my hand should hold the mud after sticking it in order not to damage the mud that had been adsorbed on, but hadn't dried. You also need to be very careful when dipping to make sure that the inside is also fully immersed in the mud.

I wasn't sure before firing if I had made it adsorb enough mud, whether it would be too little and cause subsequent breakage, etc. is unknown. But again, I don't want it to have too much thick mud, as that would result in an unclear texture.

Luckily, the results turned out to be good after the plain firing, and the crochet texture is amazing and perfect, except for a few places where there are minor holes in the mud because it's too thin.
