173 METAL FOLDING
in West Dean College (Fan Making Workshop)

27-05-2024
Learned skills related to metal folding.

This is an effect that is achieved by using the natural properties of materials.

When metal is folded and squeezed and reopened, unexpected effects are achieved. Moreover, by utilising the properties of the material, it is often possible to create a product that resembles nature.
After trying simple folding to train my basic skills, I tried a more complex folding. The result is a work of art.

Overall, it looks like a dead leaf. But I chose to polish only one of the sides so that the two sides would contrast. One side is more like a dead leaf in its natural state, while the other is more like the way I see the world. It's like the poem says that autumn always has more gold in its pockets than any other season. And the details are where this combination of artificiality and nature comes through. Mimicking the curls and curved edges of the leaves, while retaining the sharp creases created when the metal is folded by hand, it creates a contrast.

It is also a work about ‘nature and human’.

<"Autumn's Gilded Reflection: Nature and Huamn">

Folded mult1ple t1mes and opened, the presentat1on resembles that of a dead leaf. I chose to leave one s1de po11shed on one s1de to whack the folds. One s1de presents the natural state and the other s1de presents the state 1n wh1ch I see the world. ''Autumn carries more gold 1n the pocket than a11 other seasons"

In the forest, stand1ng 1n front of a b1g tree and gazing. A crack, a chunk, a scab from the wound 1t tore open as 1t thr1ved and broke through t1me and t1me aga1n. It's the scar 1mpr1nt of pro11ferat1on. I saw 1ts growth path, that gradually strong 1nner core strength and those weathered exper1ence. Between the hard and rough, furrowed textures, I saw mounta1ns, lakes, forests, depress1ons, pools and swamps, 11ke the vast, boundless earth. L1ght and dark 1ntertw1ned, h1gh and low, 1nf1n1te extens1on. Perhaps 1t 1s another k1nd of earth.
