152 THE GERMAN PAVILION AT THE VENICE BIENNALE 2024

21-04-2024
At the Venice Biennale 2024, the German Pavilion presents an exhibition titled "Thresholds," curated by Çağla Ilk, co-director of Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. This theme explores the concept of thresholds, both physical and metaphorical, reflecting the current global state of political and existential transitions. The exhibition includes works from six artists: Yael Bartana, Ersan Mondtag, Michael Akstaller, Nicole L'Huillier, Robert Lippok, and Jan St. Werner.

For the first time, the German Pavilion extends beyond its traditional space in the Giardini della Biennale to the nearby island of La Certosa. This move symbolizes a breaking of conventional boundaries, aligning with the exhibition’s theme of exploring territorial and temporal limits.

The exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on past, present, and future, inviting them to engage with the artworks in a manner that questions and transcends traditional borders and cultural narratives. The works featured in "Thresholds" critically engage with themes of identity, memory, and the socio-political landscape, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of the complex, interconnected world we inhabit.

The "Screen Immersion" concept at the German Pavilion during the Venice Biennale explored the intersection of architecture, technology, and art through innovative use of screens and digital media. It aimed to create an immersive experience where visitors could engage with digital environments and narratives within the physical space of the pavilion.

The pavilion typically showcases contemporary art and architecture from Germany, and in recent years, there has been a trend towards integrating digital technologies to enhance the viewer's experience. This approach often blurs the boundaries between physical and virtual realities, offering a unique perspective on how architecture can be perceived and interacted with in the digital age.

When viewed lying down, it really is like being in a spaceship travelling between different universes and worlds
