Certain types of flowers close at night, for self-defence and to conserve their resources. This highly evolved natural mechanism is called ‘nyctinasty’ and inspired Studio Drift to create Shylight, a sculpture that unfolds and retreats to its original state to make a fascinating choreography, mirroring the nyctinasty of real flowers. Man-made objects tend to have a static form, while everything natural in this world, including people, are subject to constant metamorphosis and adaptation to their surroundings. Shylight is the result to the question “how an inanimate object can mimic those changes that express character and emotions”?
With Shylight, Studio Drift is exploring those changes that express character and emotions in an installation of inanimate objects.
Shylight descends to blossom in all its glorious beauty, to subsequently close and retreat upwards again. This is the inspiration about to find life, emotion and personality in dead material.
Observing and feeling this project from multiple angles on site, I found that its changes and movements occurred in the following aspects: luminance, light and shadow, form and height which is also the change of the distance between people and object. This can also be one kind of object interact with people. When I stand right below, I can feel the flowers opening and approaching me at the same time, which can give people a strong impact, just like watching the blooming process of life. And when I go to the distance, the whole observation, watching these flowers jumping up and down, like enjoying an elegant dance performance. When I go up to the height and look down, my attention is attracted by the light and shadow on the ground, which changes as the flowers move and change. And the people watching under the flowers now become part of it, the dancing light and shadow and the moving crowd create another picture. Moreover,The designer designed shylights with the possibility to be programmed in different ways, such as music. While I think about what if changing with people’s behaviours?
