The first time I saw a feather pen artist in person, I saw how to sharpen a pen tip from a feather with a knife. It really is a very, very delicate and interesting thing to do. Also the way of writing and the fonts, I usually copy some artistic flower characters, but compared to professional artists, I can really see what different effects can be achieved with different pens.
There are artist who make handmade books, which are also super fun. It's lovely to see the paper in the hands of the artists transformed into a handmade book that can be visualised or interacted with in different ways.
I ended up choosing metal jewellery making, as I had never experienced it before so I was keen to get a feel for making my own jewellery. Firstly the design of this artist's jewellery is really interesting and you can see the little mechanisms hidden in it. But unfortunately if it were me I would have preferred it to be able to change due to the natural movements of a person, rather than having to hold it in my hand and play with it.
I still wanted to have a little design of my own when making it, so I made a piece of jewellery inspired by my own work from the first unit. One of the difficulties was how to fold the metal, and after discussing with the artist, I found a way to sand the folds with a sanding pen first, leaving a certain groove. Then we folded it. I am happy that it worked in the end, and the artist said she was very grateful to me for giving her one more design idea and method.
All in all, a day to see and feel many ways of crafting.
